How to Install Replacement Temples on Eyeglasses
How to Install Replacement Arm on Eyeglasses
What you need
-
A small optical screwdriver (usually Phillips or flathead)
-
Replacement temples that match your frame’s model or hinge type
-
A clean table or towel (to avoid losing screws)
-
Optional: extra hinge screws (often needed)
Inspect the hinge type
There are 3 common types:
-
Standard hinge – simple open/close
-
Spring hinge – temples flex outward
-
Hinge with exposed barrel – easy to access screw
If it's a spring hinge, replacing the temple is often harder but still doable.
Remove the old temple
- Open the temple fully.
- Hold the frame steady.
- Unscrew the hinge screw (lefty-loosey).
- Lift off the old temple.
⚠ If the screw is stuck, add a tiny drop of rubbing alcohol to dissolve old debris.
Prepare the new temple
- Line up the barrel holes (the small metal loops) with the hinge on your frame.
- Make sure the replacement is the correct side (left vs. right).
Temples are not interchangeable.
Insert the screw
- Hold the new temple perfectly aligned.
- Insert the hinge screw through the barrels.
- Tighten the screw (righty-tightie).
- Don’t overtighten—you can strip the screw.
If the screw won’t go in:
- Rotate the temple slightly until the barrels line up
- Use a longer screw temporarily to realign the hinge
Test the movement
- Open and close the temple
- Make sure the temple is secure but not stiff
- If loose, tighten slightly
